Go backpacking: Basic backpacking skills will make your first overnight alpine climb smoother.
Go on technical hikes: You'll learn to route find, get used to exposure, and build fitness in the process.
Practice technical climbing skills: Build anchors, rappel, belay, place gear, and work on rope management at familiar crags.
Take a course: There's no substitute for hands-on lessons from certified guides.
Apply what you learned: Make it a habit to practice skills that you learned in your course like reading the weather and rigging rescues.
