Overlanding is, in a nutshell, vehicle backpacking. Everything you need is in or on your car, including food, water, fuel, and your sleep system. This trending form of adventure travel is about exploring new places and the journey—not the destination. Here are some overlanding tips and gear to get your tires into the backcountry.

Don’t overland with your Honda Civic. Most unpaved roads require high clearance, 4WD or AWD, and off-road tires.

Do make sure your vehicle is in good working shape and you know how to fix any known issues.

Do bring: extra fuel, water or a water purifier, a first-aid kit, fire extinguisher, navigation system, shovel to dig out a stuck vehicle, and a satellite messenger in case of emergency.

Don’t buy all new camping gear. You can use much of the gear you use for backpacking or car camping for overlanding.

Do know the rules. Only drive in areas that allow vehicles, put out your campfire, pay attention to your surroundings, and Leave No Trace.
