Alongside Backcountry’s decade-long partner The Nature Conservancy, we visited Hawai‘i to experience the island from the mountains to the ocean—or as Hawai‘ians say, from mauka to makai. The Nature Conservancy showed us how it takes a community-based approach to challenges like climate change and food sustainability in Hawai‘i.

Cases in point? The Kona Hema Preserve, a sustainable forest managed by The Nature Conservancy, where the oldest known Acacia koa tree has stood strong for 500 years. Or, the Kiholo Preserve, royal fish ponds, which were recently restored by elders, volunteers, and The Nature Conservancy all working together.
