The Tea with Alley
Sip the Tea >

Let's discuss some tricky things that might explain why your piercing just isn't healing the way you'd like:

Today's Topics:

Trauma: bumps, pokes, prods, snags... Any of these (yes, even as minimal as poking at your piercing) can cause added heal time

Sleeping on it: do your best to sleep on the opposite side of your piercing when applicable - if you absolutely must sleep on your side, invest in a travel donut pillow to keep your ear off the bed/pillow

Hygiene:
it's very important to keep your piercing clean! We recommend a nice warm shower and a sterile saline spray once a day. You can actually over-clean your piercings though! Don't clean them so much that they dry out, which can have the opposite effect.

Jewelry: this one's more on your pro piercer, but sometimes the jewelry you were pierced with isn't right for your personal body; isn't the right size; or just isn't conducive to healing.

Medical Issue:
if you think this is the case, you should definitely go visit your pro piercer ASAP! A hidden infection; debris caught in your piercing; or any sort of medical complication isn't worth ignoring.

Dear Alley

Piercing migrated out, should I get it redone?

Dear Alley
Alley S.
BodyCandy's pierced pro & fashion forward diva
DEAR ALLEY:Β About 2Β years ago, I got my navel piercing and I had a hard time healing it. I’m not sure if my body was rejecting the jewelry, or if it was because I also gained weight afterwards.

I left my piercing in for about a year and a half after getting it pierced and even though I was always cleaning it properly, I feel as if it never was healing. It constantly hurt and was always sore.

I took my belly ring out one night and by the next morning my hole had closed up. Now I have a significant scar - it’s about one (1) inch long. IΒ
really miss my piercing because it was super cute!

What is your opinion on getting it redone?
- Lacie

Will my piercing change as I age?

DEAR ALLEY:Β I have a belly piercing that I had done when I was 29. Now, I'm 58 and my skin is naturally thinning from getting older.

My belly ring still looks good, but I've noticed the area of the piercing is getting smaller. Is this common in us older gals?

I'm assuming this is a natural occurrence for aging, but I'd like your take on this. Thank you so much Alley!

- Jennifer

Β

How can I get rid of this bump?

DEAR ALLEY: I tried switching my nose ring only after a couple weeks...

I ended up keeping the original nose ring and the after effect is a piercing bump in place of my nose ring. I took the nose ring out but there’s still a bump.

How can I get rid of it??

Thanks,
- Shanika
