In 2007, using a ballpoint pen and hotel stationery, Jonas Wood sketched ancient Greek, Oceanic and African vessels in the collection of the Met in New York. It is likely that these were the inspiration for his two-metre-high painting, Big Naked Snakes, executed five years later

M.C. Escher’s 1955 lithograph Convex and Concave is an example of his ‘impossible architecture’. The windows, stairs and roads on the left are consistent with a view from above. The same elements on the right appear as though seen from below — covering half the picture makes this effect clearer

This 19th-century alpine sleigh is decorated with grotesques, flowers and lakeside vistas, overlooked by a lion rampant. Possibly made in Tyrol, it comes from the collection of philanthropist and collector Baroness Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza
