James Archer’s The Parting of Robert Burns and Highland Mary depicts the Scottish poet’s last meeting with Margaret Campbell, with whom he had planned to begin a new life in the West Indies. Campbell died soon after their final tryst, possibly of typhoid. The painting was exhibited by Archer at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1858

This articulated iron crow is made from numerous hammered iron plates that allow its beak, wings and neck to move. Signed Myochin Muneharu, it dates from the last decades of Japan’s Edo Period (1603-1868), when metalsmiths who had once made samurai armour turned their skills to decorative and symbolic sculptures, known as jizai okimono

This personal collection of more than 200 scores belonged to the opera superstar nicknamed ‘La Divina’, Maria Callas. A number of them come with dedications from composers, librettists and admirers; others with marks by Callas herself, made when preparing for roles she’d make her own, including Carmen and Paolina in Donizetti’s Poliuto
