James Turrell is best known for Roden Crater, the extinct volcano in Arizona he is transforming into a study of light and space. Raemar (Pale Blue) is one of the artist’s earliest Shallow Space Constructions, combining sculpture, light, architecture and atmosphere. There are three other works titled Raemar, one of which is held by the Tate Gallery

This Study of a Child’s Head from Peter Paul Rubens’ workshop would have served as a model for larger commissions. It is possible that his own nephew was used as its subject. The Flemish master’s studio was a powerhouse of 17th-century art, and his students included Anthony van Dyck and Jacob Jordaens
