The Nigerian-American artist Toyin Ojih Odutola works exclusively with drawing materials — ink, pastel, pencil, charcoal — to create portraits such as Untitled, executed in 2011. ‘I’m known for my very layered, intricate mark-making,’ she told The Guardian newspaper in August. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was around 16 years old when he painted Cheval de chasse à courre in 1880. An aristocratic upbringing, in which riding had been a principal pastime, contributed to the artist’s lifelong fascination with horses. This work is signed Monfa — short for his full family name, de Toulouse-Lautrec-Monfa

This Egyptian bronze cat head, just over 3 in (7.9 cm) high, has been dated to circa 664-332 BC. It has a scarab on its forehead, and a lightly incised image of a falcon on the back of it. Both decorations are linked to the solar deities Bastet and Sakhmet, as well as the feline aspect of Re, sometimes called ‘The Great Cat who dwells in Heliopolis’
