The French painter Gully was a graffiti artist for more than a decade, finally switching from street to studio in the early 2000s. He is known for ‘appropriating’ the work of others, and Hommage NTHK Miro, from 2023, is a good example, mixing the abstract forms of Joan Miró with Edward Hopper’s bar scene, Nighthawks

This part dinner service, from around 1969, features the ‘Flora Danica’ design of Danish plants created by Royal Copenhagen Porcelain in 1802. The original set was to have been a gift for Catherine the Great of Russia, but she died before its completion. Instead, it was first used at King Christian VII’s birthday in 1803

When Willem van Veldhuizen made his 1978 painting A Summer Afternoon in the Centre Pompidou, the institution was still new. Yet its striking architecture is merely hinted at in a narrow strip at the top of the canvas, as is the Parisian skyline. Most of the work is devoted to a minutely detailed expanse of floor, suggesting a haven of space and serenity

The motif of the ‘green man’, a foliage-covered, bearded face often seen in Gothic churches, is central to this Irish mahogany console table. Though carved in the 1800s, the piece, with its cabriole legs, ball-and-claw feet, and swags of carved leaves and berries, is in the Georgian style of the previous century
