This painting from Mughal India shows a deer beside a zig-zagging river in a stylised landscape, with hazy domes on the horizon. It illustrates a tale in which a prince, Raj Kunwar, falls in love with an elusive woman who can transform herself magically into a doe — which explains the jewellery the animal is wearing
