The French artist Rosa Bonheur was fascinated by bison. She had met William Cody (aka Buffalo Bill) at the Wild West show he ran just outside Paris in 1889, at the time of the Universal Exposition, and made detailed drawings of the animals there. Her 1896 pastel Migration of the Bison shows how closely she had studied them

Two unknown works (now destroyed) by Francis Bacon appear in Francis Bacon’s Studio, a painting from 1932-33 by Roy de Maistre. The influential Australian artist, who had befriended Bacon in 1930, clearly saw something in the younger man’s work, painting his studios on more than one occasion

‘Extinct and loving it’ would seem to describe the dancing dinosaurs that adorn this limited-edition Lady Dior handbag. Dating from 2021, the canvas bag features silver hardware and green-and-pink Dino embroidery on a vivid orange background dotted with flame motifs, suggesting a kind of prehistoric disco inferno

Few artists of his day were as well-travelled as Hiroshi Yoshida. Born in 1876 in Kurume, on the Japanese island of Kyushu, he studied in Kyoto and Tokyo before setting off on extended trips to China, India, the USA, Switzerland and Egypt — where he found the subject for his 1925 print Sufuinkusu (Sphinx, day)
