The city that has held a life-long fascination for Richard Estes appears in his New York Harbor, dating from 2000. A brilliant gouache-and-pencil study of evening light and the movement of water, it is a view from the famous Staten Island Ferry, which figures more prominently in other works by the artist

These two Chinese dishes, made in the Kangxi period (1662-1722), are decorated with scenes from the story of the Yang family. Most of the family’s men were killed in a Tartar raid, so the women became warriors to avenge them. Here we see them practising their equestrian skills before riding off into battle
