René Magritte (1898-1967), L’empire des lumières, 1954. Estimate on Request. MICA : THE COLLECTION OF MICA ERTEGUN | Part I, New York, 19 November. © 2024 C. Herscovici / Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York. |
As we enter the autumn auction season, I am delighted to announce some of the exceptional art and objects that will be offered by Christie’s.
Undoubtedly René Magritte’s L’empire des lumières with its mysterious and surreal beauty is one of the most spectacular paintings we have ever offered at auction. As part of MICA: THE COLLECTION OF MICA ERTEGUN, it anchors a collection that reflects Mrs Ertegun’s refined taste as a world-renowned designer, philanthropist and collector. In addition to the Magritte, the collection includes major works by Miró, Hockney and others. They will be on view in Hong Kong, London and Paris before their final presentation and sale in New York in November.
In the meantime, we will share our passion for art and luxury with you around the world: |
Hong Kong
We have officially opened our new Asia Pacific headquarters at The Henderson, and our inaugural sales will take place on 26 and 27 September.
Headlining the sales will be Van Gogh’s Les Canots amarrés and Monet’s Nymphéas, the creative prelude to his Water Lilies series, to be auctioned for the first time in over 125 years. Another notable highlight is Zao Wou-Ki’s seminal 05.06.80 - Triptyque. A selection of Chinese art from the legendary Au Bak Ling Collection will also be sold during the Hong Kong sales.
London and Paris
Our October sales are timed to coincide with Frieze London and Art Basel Paris. The sales are led by Lucian Freud’s late masterpiece Ria, Naked Portrait, deeply rooted in the art historical tradition of the reclining female nude, Jeff Koons’ celebrated sculpture Balloon Monkey (Blue) in London, and the emblematic Buste sur la selle de l’atelier by Alberto Giacometti in Paris.
New York
We are honoured and privileged to present Francois-Xavier Lalanne, Sculpteur. This exquisite selection of works from the collection of his daughter, Dorothée Lalanne, will be offered for sale at auction on 10 October. The works celebrate Francois-Xavier’s sculptural talent and almost half a century of innovation in an exhibition curated by Simon Porte Jacquemus.
Geneva
Our November luxury sales will feature an iconic jewel: “The Aga Khan Emerald”, a 37 carat gemstone previously offered at our very first Geneva Magnificent Jewels sale in 1969 as part of the collection of Nina Dyer, who received the Cartier brooch on the occasion of her wedding.
