What’s the Problem with Chicken?

Chances are, you’ve heard about factory farming and the crowded conditions chickens are raised in.

The conventional chicken you buy at the supermarket is usually full of antibiotics and other chemicals you don’t want in your food. Even “cage free” and “free range” don’t necessarily mean your chicken is better for you.

So how do you know what kind of chicken to buy and what to avoid? Here’s a simple breakdown of the various chicken labels and what they mean.

Chicken Labels and What They Mean

Cage Free Image

Cage Free

These chickens don’t live in a cage but are still stuck in the barn with thousands of others. They barely have any personal space and need to be given antibiotics and caffeine to stay alive.

Yikes!

Free Range Image

Free Range

These chickens are able to go outside if they want to. However, barn conditions are still crowded and they’re fed the same GMO-grains and other bad stuff.

No thanks!!

Pasture Raised IMage

Pasture Raised

These chickens are able to forage for their food and live a more natural life. Pasture raised chicken is more expensive but the meat is much cleaner and healthier for you.

I’ll take an order of that, please!

Conclusion: You Want Pasture Raised Chicken

Pasture raised chicken is free of antibiotics and other chemicals factory farmed chicken is exposed to. That means your meat is cleaner and healthier, which will benefit you in the long run.

I suggest checking your local farmer’s market for organic, pasture raised chicken. It’s the right choice for your health.
