Dear Entrepreneur, As you closed 2018 and prepared for 2019, how did you evaluate the past year? You could have harped on the bad or celebrated the good – and I've certainly done both. But I prefer to keep my focus on the things I set in motion. It’s the stuff that only began in 2018, but that will become bigger and more important to me in this year and beyond. A year isn't an isolated block of time, after all. It's an interlocking part. Our work in one year should strengthen the next.
Our January issue is designed with that in mind. There’s no “new year, new you” stuff in here. Instead, we focus on building and growing: We learn how our cover guy Michael Strahan took what he learned in football and applied it to a totally new career, why young startup founders are increasingly relying upon retirees to help their businesses grow, what keeps companies like McDonald’s atop our annual Franchise 500 list for decades, and more.
Entrepreneurship may feel like fits and starts, but it’s really about continuity. We don’t reinvent ourselves with the turn of a calendar; we aren’t machines with reset buttons. Rather, we learn from our pasts and build upon our accomplishments. I’m excited for us all in 2019. It’s a new year, and the next phase of our journey. |
