As travel has ground to a halt around the globe, the hospitality industry is suffering. That includes Airbnb hosts, who often look to the platform for extra income to help them pay their mortgages. But while hosts are struggling, affordable housing activists are celebrating. With COVID-19 spreading, some short-term rentals like Airbnbs are being converted to longer term rentals, which could help to lower housing prices overall.
As one New Orleans activist put it: “Anything that delivers units back onto the market is potentially a very good thing.” Though it’s unclear whether the trend will stick, it’s a small silver lining for those who have long criticized Airbnb and its ilk for pushing up housing prices.
