| | in partnership with | | | | Good morning! In case you missed it, yesterday Fast Company announced the winners of our 2021 World Changing Ideas Awards—the people, projects, and companies that are boldly reimagining the world of business for a post-pandemic era. But the real magic is in the details. For an inspiring start to your day, I wanted to share a few highlights from among our 34 categories.
First up, our general excellence winner is a project from Microsoft called Premonition. It wasn’t designed with this pandemic in mind, but it may be helpful in stopping the next one. It gathers mosquitoes and samples the blood inside them, looking for pathogens in animals so it can serve as an early warning system for new diseases—like COVID—that might jump from humans to animals.
The Visual Weighing Device, the winner of our Asia-Pacific category, is designed to make it easier for rural health workers to figure out how much babies weigh, in order to better diagnose and mitigate low birth weight. Instead of carrying around a heavy scale that can easy become miscalibrated, this app can figure out a baby’s exact weight just by taking a video on your phone.
And finally, make sure to check out the winner of our food category, Perfect Day, a food technology company that makes milk. Here’s the exciting part: Their milk doesn’t come from cows, but it’s also not oat milk or soy milk or almond milk. It’s real milk, made with milk proteins, but those proteins are made in a bioreactor. So while their ice cream tastes exactly like cow’s milk ice cream, it’s also vegan and safe to eat for people who are lactose intolerant.
