It’s the middle of summer, which means parents, teachers and kids are already wondering what will happen at the end of August: will schools reopen in-person? Or will classes be online, like most of the past spring? President Trump has come out in favor of opening schools, but others think that there is still too much risk for Covid-19 transmission. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a press conference today that opening schools should be a state decision, not one dictated by the federal government. But choosing to stick with online-only classes has created other obstacles. Yesterday, the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, also known as ICE, said that international college students would be subject to deportation if schools only have classes online (Harvard and MIT are already suing over this policy).
