Dear Gardener— Today marks the summer solstice; the sun has reached its northernmost point in Earth's sky, with the North Pole at its maximum tilt. This brings the longest day of the calendar year and the first day of true summer in the Northern Hemisphere. For thousands of years, this culturally significant event has been celebrated with fertility-themed festivals and rituals. Our human love of summer and its bounty transcends time and space.

Surely you’re already marveling at the seasonal warmth and fecundity in your garden and beyond; backyard privacy has returned with the fullness of trees, roadside fields and vegetation seem to grow feet overnight, and many spring-planted veggies are ripe for harvesting and sharing. Modern-day stressors and tensions notwithstanding, our gardens offer solace, sustenance, and the best kind of summer staycation.

The peonies bloom, the cornstalks reach, and the strawberries ripen. As our gardens produce all around us, the GSC team is contemplating the very notion of productivity. Our plants grow, but they don’t strain. They may develop rapidly this time of year, but they don’t rush. They yield fruit, but only the fruit that each individual species is hard-coded to yield. As spring turns to summer, borrow wisdom from the garden: Take it easy; slow things down. Bask in the sun like a lizard and watch things grow awhile. Weed, water, and nurture your unique nature—what’s hard-coded in you?
