A month after Mark Wahlberg adopted the Patek Philippe Cubitus and roughly five weeks since its launch in Munich, Jay-Z has entered the chat. This week, the rapper was spotted at the Cowboys-Commanders game rocking the ref. 5821/A-001—the green-dial, time-and-date version of the maison’s first new collection in 25 years. A Patek die-hard, it’s little surprise that the rapper and music mogul picked up one of the first batch to come out of Geneva. There’s no downplaying the power of Jay’s co-sign: When launching a brand-new product family, it certainly doesn’t hurt to get your watch on the wrist of one of the most visible celebrities (and most tasteful collectors) in the world.
Jay, much like Wahlberg, opted for one of two simpler Cubitus executions showing only the time and date. This reference is comprised of a 40mm stainless steel case, an integrated bracelet, and a sunburst, horizontally embossed dial with applied white gold hour markers, the 5821/A-001 clearly takes its lineage from the luxury sports watches designed by Gérald Genta in the 1970s—foremost among these being, of course, Patek’s own Nautilus. But as Patek Philippe President Theirry Stern explained to GQ and a group of fellow journalists in Munich, the idea of the Cubitus was deeply personal. Stern had long wanted to design a square-cased timepiece and dreamt up the name “Cubitus” himself.
