Another edition of Paris Men’s Fashion Week is in the books, and GQ’s style team covered the onslaught of shows and parties from every available angle. Here’s what you need to know.
- The Flip-Flop Is Officially an “It’ Shoe. If you doubted at all that the summer’s most controversial trend had staying power, we’ve got news for you. After cropping up at a red-carpet movie premiere and in the GQ offices (!), flip-flops were wholly inescapable in Paris. On the runways, no fewer than half a dozen major brands—including Auralee, Louis Vuitton, Dries Van Noten, Hermès, Prada, and Lemaire—trotted out upscale spins on the notorious thong sandal, while outside on the streets, attendees seeking a little relief from the record-breaking heat chose to let their dogs out with their high-fashion fineries. “It’s rare in menswear to see such a universal shape have this kind of refresh and resurgence,” Mytheresa buyer Sophie Jordan told GQ’s Samuel Hine.
- Dressy Clothes Are Evolving. Fresh approaches to fine tailoring defined the highest-profile shows. During Jonathan Anderson’s much-hyped Dior debut, louche tweed sport coats and floppy cravats mingled freely with beat-to-hell denim and ankle-skimming cargo shorts on the runway, while A-listers like Daniel Craig and A$AP Rocky looked on in artfully askew officewear from the front row. After scoring a viral hit with his knee-high waders, Anthony Vacarello nixed them entirely from his latest Saint Laurent collection, which instead featured a monochromatic array of flowy power suits and thigh-baring tennis shorts inspired by a vintage photo of Yves Saint Laurent himself. In addition to opening his show with a charged invocation of ICE, Willy Chavarria offered up plenty of the strong-shouldered blazers and deep-pleated trousers that have become his calling card. And at Louis Vuitton, Pharrell Williams presented a rakish vision of India by way of Wes Anderson, heavy on travel-ready two-pieces and painterly leather caryalls.
- Celebrities Are Not the Only Ones to Watch. Speaking of Pharrell: His bodyguard, a former Secret Service agent named Dalontee Edgerton, happens to be one of the best-dressed people at Paris Fashion Week season after season. He was joined in those ranks by major stars like Jay-Z and Beyoncé in sleek LV denim, Matthew McConnaughey and Robert Pattinson in advanced tailored wear, and a gaggle of fashion insiders beating the humidity in all manner of excellent shorts.
