Leigh started using Khan Academy when she began teaching in a New York juvenile detention center. With a single math class made up of girls ranging from seventh to twelfth grade, it was a challenge to get each of them the lessons they needed. “That’s when I realized I can’t do this on my own and really dug into Khan Academy,” recalled Leigh.

Khan Academy transformed her students’ experience with math as well as their confidence in learning.

“It really changed how they entered my room every day,” she remembers. While they started out apprehensive and depressed, they soon came “running into the classroom, being excited, saying, ‘I've never understood math before, but here I am getting it.’”

It can be life changing. Algebra 1 has historically been a barrier to high school graduation and college completion. Imagine knowing in ninth grade “whether you are going to make it or not.” Leigh’s students had a 100% pass rate on the Algebra 1 state exam required for graduation. Leigh says, “It's definitely a huge impact on their life. It is amazing for them to be able to say, ‘I'm on the right path. I have a chance at this.’”
