SCARY GOOD JEANS

You're looking at "Fang Face," the winner of a 1990 Philippines Levi’s® Denim Art contest — a pair of 501® jeans decorated by Erlito Velasquez.

Customization has been a part of denim history since the invention of blue jeans, when miners would patch up holes, add flaps to pockets, or sew on denim strips for padding as a practical matter. By the 1960s, alterations had become practical and stylish — and terrifically colorful — as a generation of hippies expressed their politics through American-flag patches and painted peace signs.

In 1973, thousands entered the first Levi’s® Denim Art Contest in the USA, which led to more contests around the world…which led, eventually, to "Fang Face."
