LEFTIES BUY JEANS, TOO
Unless you’re a dedicated denimhead, you probably haven’t given much thought to how or why your standard jeans came to have five pockets. Unless you’re a historian, you probably haven’t invested much time researching the four-pocket jeans that came before. And unless you’re a genius (or peeked at the photo above), you probably would never have guessed that the fifth and last pocket added to Levi’s® jeans wasn’t the humble watch pocket (the small pouch on your front right hip) but the back left one.

We call these jeans Spur Bites because they seem to have been worn by a cowboy, based on the wear patterns, patching in the seat and on the back and chewed-up bottom hems. Levi’s® acquired these in the late-1990s. Though their provenance is unknown, we could tell immediately that they were from the 1800s, because we didn’t add the second back pocket until 1901.

The back left pocket remained there ever since, serving as a symmetrical design piece, a helpful storage pouch for southpaws, and eventually the home to millions upon millions of smartphones. Just please remove your phone before sitting. Nobody wants glass in their ... well, you know.
