An Unlikely Match-Up: Polyphemus vs. Surtr This Unlikely Match-Up is a battle of giant proportions as we pit Polyphemus, the famed cyclops from the Odyssey, against Surtr, one of the most dangerous jotunn in all of Norse mythology. Which of these mythical monsters will prove the mightier foe? Polyphemus starts out strong as the son of Poseidon, god of the sea in Greek mythology. Gigantic in size, Polyphemus has one eye in the center of his forehead and a taste for human blood, as evidenced by the tale of Odysseus and his party being held captive and devoured two by two after they break into his cave home. On the other side of the ring, we have Surtr. A major player in the world-ending events of Ragnarok, Surtr is a jotunn, or giant, who guards Muspell, the realm of fire, with his flaming sword in hand. When the time of Ragnarok draws nigh, it is said he will ride forth, defeat the god Freyr, and engulf the world in flames. It's the fury of Poseidon's cyclops son versus the flames of Ragnarok in this week's Unlikely Match-up, but who will win? You decide!
