Genghis Khan vs. King Richard I

This week's Unlikely Match-Up puts together two famous warlords from history: Genghis Khan and King Richard I, aka Richard the Lionheart. With mixed reputations of great violence, ambition, and military skill, these two rulers are well-matched. Founder of the Mongol Empire, Genghis Khan was the son of a chief, but he and his family were exiled from their own tribe after his father's death. Slowly, he regained power through political alliances and his preference for meritocracy, which attracted followers of every class. Genghis Khan was known for siege warfare techniques, feigned retreats, and for brutally slaughtering most of the civilian population of the many lands they conquered. Eventually, he united all tribes of Northeast Asia and conquered most of Eurasia. King Richard the Lionheart, on the other hand, was not known for his interest in ruling or expanding his own kingdom of England. Taking command of an army at age 16, Richard spent most of his adult life on Crusade or defending his French lands. Some remember him for his chivalry, courage, and desire for glory, while others describe him as mercilessly violent. Quick-witted and crafty in his military leadership, he was also a skilled fighter in his own right, shooting down guards high up on a wall with his crossbow while ill and being carried away on a stretcher. Both are renowned for their military competency and ambition, but who would win in a fight? You decide! Vote here.
