Battery vs Generator: Which is Better For Travelling Off-Grid?

Pros of Batteries:
  • Silent operation.
  • Compact and lightweight.
  • If you’re using your battery with solar panels, it’s essentially free to power your gear.
  • Can be cheap to set up.
  • Can be very portable.

Cons of Batteries:
  • Installation required.
  • Limited application. You’re limited to the appliances a battery can power. Unlike with generators, high current appliances  can be a limiting factor.

Pros of Generators:
  • 240V output available.
  • Generators run on fuel.
  • Can run appliances that draw a high current.
  • Can run sensitive gear.
  • No installation required.

Cons of Generators:
  • Noise, emissions and restrictions.
  • Fuel. You can’t run your generator without fuel, so you always need to carry enough for your power needs.
  • Usually heavier and bulkier than a battery option.
