I’m in Bali, sheltering in place with my family during the crisis. We see firsthand how your purchases positively impact the lives of artisans here. Most of them continue to produce directly from their homes. We’re so happy to see new products coming in from every region, every day.
I’m personally excited about the woven bamboo handbags from Ahmad and the silver Hill Tribe cuff bracelets from Pakaon Sojintarit with their refined sophistication. I love textiles, so when I saw the gorgeous cotton shawls and scarves from Elena Ixtamer in Guatemala, I had to have one! Every day we receive messages of gratitude from artisans who are so thankful to have work and sales right now. A few of them wanted to share their words of appreciation directly.
I'm the mother of four wonderful children. They have been my strength every day: They cheer me on to continue working every day to give them a better future.
We live in a little town called San Juan la Laguna. Here we have a small shop and we also do tours where we demonstrate the process of dying threads and weaving them into beautiful pieces of art. Our town is visited by national and international tourists every day. However, due to the restrictions during the pandemic, streets are completely empty and no one from outside the town has visited for over a month. I haven't been able to sell even one piece here so, right now, I'm focusing my complete weaving capacity on Novica. For the time being, this is my only source of income and the only way I can keep feeding my children every day. I'm thankful to all of you that keep buying the handwoven designs that I love so much.
I'm a new artisan in Novica. I’m from Lombok, a small island next to Bali. Almost all of my handbags are made in Lombok, where my friends, neighbors and relatives craft them. Our people have been creating round woven bags for many years, and have been selling them well everywhere in Indonesia. The design and inspiration comes mostly from our geography, as we have many beautiful beaches, and also from the island’s weaving culture. We have lots of designs and colors to show you and hope you’ll support the people of Lombok with your purchases.
I have been working with hill tribe silversmiths for years. All my designs are based on the culture of the Karen and Mien or Yao hill tribes, combined with modern shapes. The pieces are assembled into jewelry to feature the uniqueness of hill tribe silver from Thailand.
I would like to preserve and inherit the wisdom of hill tribe silver. I also want to support their art as a symbol of Chiang Mai.
I'm very grateful to Novica for helping me present my jewelry in this difficult situation. And I am thankful to the shoppers who buy my designs, especially some with messages of encouragement rated 5 stars from Karen, Mark and Lori. They make my day. I hope that we can overcome this hard time soon.
Creating these birds fills my life. I get my inspiration from their many bright colors, and their songs that never fail to bring me peace and joy. I've always felt that birds can 'talk' to me, and I can create my replica versions from what I'm able to get from the birds.
I try to make every sculpture in such a way that I can imprint them with my own feelings. When creating and shaping the sculptures, I'm leaving a small piece of me with them. I'm inspired by the freedom of each bird — I reflect on them flying in different countries, different homes, and my sculptures are a way to share a piece of me in every corner of the world.
What I try to convey in every bird is the faith and existence of a new self, an opportunity to be better, to value life, value our world, to change the wrongs for good. To keep the faith in a supreme being, God, and trust that all the changes are going to bring more good to humankind.
We can compare the situation we're going through now to the darkest of nights and, no matter how dark the night is, the sun always rises and we can see its light shining again.
The inspiration for every piece of fabric from my backstrap loom, for every handbag or accessory comes from our landscapes — from dawn or sunset, from nature. I choose the colors and combine them to create an interesting palette. I come from the highlands of Chiapas and I feel proud that you like my work.
