When a group of women weavers from Guatemala's Lake Atitlan region decided to swap traditional textile weaving for woven beads, the results were stunning.
"We are still dedicated to weaving other things on our backstrap looms," says Rosa Hernándes, "but this craft is a new way to earn income and imprint our patterns and designs in another form."
Rosa belongs to Weaving Hands of Atitlan, a group of women artisans from the town of Santa Cruz, near Lake Atitlán. Like most women in her community, Rosa was taught from a young age to weave her own clothes and all of the textiles used in her home.
"This art allows us to work from home, take care of our children and earn a decent living. People like our designs a lot. We are very meticulous and we take pride in the work we do."
