NOVICA ARTISANS SHARE THEIR POWERFUL PERSPECTIVES ON RACE AND ART

Akwele Suma
"I have always lived as a proud black African who is very much passionate about my culture. My works of art are a way of preserving my heritage. What happens to blacks and black communities in the US happens all across the globe. We should be there for one another to stay strong. Be each other’s keeper and consider what concerns one as a concern for all. I use my art to address and educate people — especially women — that we are all human and must treat others the way we want to be treated.

Whenever I receive a new order, I feel connected to another person — a customer — through my art. I believe that the connection that emanates through my works of art sends positive vibrations, creating oneness and harmony that makes this world a better place for humanity. One Love."
This week, 25% of sales from Akwele’s collection will be donated to Black Girls Code, an organization dedicated to giving young and pre-teen girls of color opportunities to learn in-demand skills in technology and computer programming.

K. Baka
"I'm very proud and passionate about my roots and culture and I try to convey this in my paintings and batiks. To ensure the continuity of my culture, I have begun teaching art to promote it and educate others as a means of providing job skills to the youth. This is my way of contributing to the preservation of the African culture.

I have also come to realize that purchases of my products, and the support I get from all of you gives me a feeling of togetherness, belonging and love. It has created a great bonding, and connection with the rest of the world.

It brings joy to my heart to know that somebody somewhere, across countries and borders, loves my creations. This feeling draws me closer to wherever my products are in the world."
This week, 25% of sales from K. Baka’s collection will be donated to Black Girls Code, an organization dedicated to giving young and pre-teen girls of color opportunities to learn in-demand skills in technology and computer programming.

Ila Suleyman
"A proverb here in Africa says that, when you see your friend's beard is burning, you don't watch it burn, but help to quench the fire and put a pot of water beside yourself as well, or dip your beard in the water. I attempt to share my culture and pride as a black person and also communicate important messages through my jewelry crafted to inspire those who love my Art.

I try to encourage myself with optimism to bear my present difficulties for the hope of a better tomorrow. I believe in my success and love what I do, all because of the support that I get for my works of art by you, my customers. I hope we can break the boundaries and borders between us for a closer connection to make us feel like one people to enjoy what our creator has made for us."
This week, 25% of sales from Ila’s collection will be donated to Black Girls Code, an organization dedicated to giving young and pre-teen girls of color opportunities to learn in-demand skills in technology and computer programming.

Robert Aidoo-Taylor
"Purchases from customers make me feel like l’m running a race of interdependency, which connects and unites me to people all over the world.

I wish to state that racism is suicidal to every race and should not be entertained. It is my wish that people of the world would let us all join our talents and resources together to make the world a better place to live."
This week, 25% of sales from Robert’s collection will be donated to Black Girls Code, an organization dedicated to giving young and pre-teen girls of color opportunities to learn in-demand skills in technology and computer programming.
