The artisan, Achara, describes it best when she says, “Thai people expect our women to be strong, to dare to think, dare to do and take responsibility.” In Thailand, women perform a complex balancing act, often caring for aging parents, raising children, tending the home, supporting their partners — all while earning an income.
We asked some of our Thai artisans how they managed these competing demands. Their answers revealed a deep sense of duty, responsibility, and love. Bun khun, the idea that “a favor causes obligation,” is often embraced by these women, not as a burden, but in the form of gratitude, joyfully returning the kindnesses of others and repaying debts.
