Travel is on hold, markets are closed, artisans are challenged but coping — and online sales mean survival. Every artisan’s story is different but many center on change. For Ying and Joy, it’s a change that began well before Covid.
Ying and Joy have been friends for many years. They met while working in the factory of a large international clothing brand in their hometown of Chiang Mai. But their world turned upside down when the company moved their operations to another country.
"It was sad. We enjoyed working there and we learned so much about the clothing business. Many of the women who worked at the factory were over 40 and couldn’t find jobs elsewhere. It was a time of change, but we turned this crisis into an opportunity.
Using our contacts from the old company, we began to create our own apparel designs. We now give work to the women who once worked alongside us at the old factory. We want to grow and expand our workshop so we can keep these women employed. We are always looking for new markets and we are very excited that our designs can now be purchased by NOVICA shoppers."
Ying and Joy create woven, knitted, hand-embroidered, and dyed garments. They focus on natural fabrics, handcrafted details and international styles that are contemporary and easy to wear.
