Miriam | Guatemala
When Mirian was born, the village was afraid to tell her father that he’d just had a baby girl. To everyone’s surprise, when he saw his daughter, he wrapped her up in his arms and showered her with love. It is this same love that Mirian pours into her weaving, and into her own role as mother. She says: “Being a mother is one of the things I’m most grateful to God for. To carry another being inside of you is something you can't put into words. A mother's love is so unique because she will fight every day to give them the best she can.”
Before she became a paper jewelry maker, Francis was a social worker. A woman at the shelter where she worked had a tic — she would ball up tiny pieces of paper. Francis wanted a project for this woman and the others in the shelter. Little did she know that it would kick-start her own life’s passion. "Art for me has a social nature. It provides me with my sustenance and income, but this is not the main foundation of my art. I work with communities in need, shelters for street people, non-profit projects and movements. I believe art is an instrument of transition.” Not only is Francis a mother, and a grandmother to six (five of whom live with her), but she is also a mother figure to so many.
In Elena’s family, love is legacy. At eight years-old, her mother taught her to weave, a skill passed down from her grandmother to her mother many years before. Just as weaving binds together disparate threads, Elena understands her own life as intricately connected to her ancestors and to her progeny. Today, she passes the intimate knowledge of the backstrap loom on to her own daughters, Lisbeth, Leyla, and Juana. “Every day is a new opportunity to learn together. Quality time that unites us and strengthens our relationship.”
