Photo by Renny Gamarra | | Every year, Peru celebrates its Inca heritage with the Inti Raymi festival on June 24, which marks the New Year, according to the Inca calendar. Because Peru is south of the equator, Inti Raymi falls in the middle of winter — the darkest day of the year. Yet the festival, which derives its name from the Quechuan language, is in honor of Inti, the Sun God. Therefore, on the shortest day of the year, it is a beckoning call to the Sun God to return, to bless the crops and bestow life on the world.
This year, when Peru has been hit so hard with the pandemic — earning it the most devastating per capita death toll in the world — Inti Raymi will be even more significant, full of hope for the vaccine rollout. Many artisans have been affected, they deeply appreciate every single one of your purchases. | | | | | |
