Chestnut-brown flowers laced with blue vines, geometric patterns in perfect symmetry, timeless knits that link the ancient past with the ever-changing present. These are just some of the motifs expressed in Maria Cutipa’s incredible alpaca creations.
Born in Cusco, Peru, Maria dives deep into the culture and history of the Andes to unearth a textile tradition that began with the Incas. She says, “Their tapestries and feathered cloaks are legendary. Inca art shows an extraordinary sense of symmetry, which is reflected in the neatly organized figures.”
One of the skills Maria brings to many of her pieces is known as intarsia-style knitting. The technique makes use of color blocks, which requires foresight and patience. A single sweater can take days to knit. But Maria would have it no other way.
"As an artisan in Peru dedicated to the art of weaving, I am so proud to present our handmade alpaca wool clothing. Our garment collections represent our culture and traditions, and bring with them an art form that for centuries we have been inheriting and perfecting, while maintaining the soul of the Andean people."
In every poncho, sweater and cardigan, we see traces of this rich history, even as Maria makes alpaca fashion relevant for our modern lives. It’s why her customers leave reviews like, “This is the most beautiful sweater I have ever had…”
