At NOVICA, we aim to offer more than an incredible shopping experience. We want to transport you to the far reaches of the world, introduce you to artisans you might never otherwise meet, preserve disappearing crafts and lost arts that have been passed down for generations. That’s why we’re paying attention to all the small details that make your experience special.
One of those details comes to us via Bali. If you’ve ever had the pleasure of receiving a NOVICA package from the region, you might remember a small, woven figure decorating the outside of the box. The cili (pronounced: chili) doll is an effigy to the rice goddess, Dewi Sri. Were you to travel across the world and wander through the traditional villages in the region, you would encounter the dolls everywhere – large and small.
The Bali region team explains, “The cili doll adorns many shrines, they are used as a Balinese offering for hope.” When asked why they decided to include them in the packages they so carefully hand-wrap, they said, “By putting the doll on our packaging, we hope it may bring prosperity to the Novica family and customers.” |
