With 2023 almost here, we’re exploring New Year’s Eve traditions from Novica regions around the globe. Today, we look to Ghana, the home of our Artisan Empowerment Hub in West Africa.
Walk down any street in the capital of Accra on the days leading up to NYE and you’ll see billboards and posters advertising huge “Crossover” events, a celebration of the new year that is deeply rooted in religion.
While you’ll find the same types of parties, family gatherings, and fireworks displays as elsewhere in the world, you’ll also discover the unique relationship between Christmas and New Years that expresses itself in Crossover. In churches and auditoriums around the country, Christians gather to praise God, pray, sing, and ensure that all disputes of the previous year have been settled – to usher in 2023 with a clean slate.
This year, for the first time, a huge, star-studded event will be held at Black Star Square, where performers, fireworks and an incredible New Year’s Eve show are to be broadcast around the world.
After midnight, the parties turn up the volume, and spill over into the early hours of January. |
