With its roots in the indigenous Aztec traditions of Mexico, Día de los Muertos is a celebration of life and death that has become increasingly popular across the world. The holiday officially begins on the eve of October 31st and lasts for two days, when friends and family honor those who have passed away.
While the festival’s origins are firmly anchored in indigenous traditions, the celebration has evolved to incorporate aspects of Roman Catholicism and coincides with two important Catholic holidays – All Saints’ Day (November 1st) and All Souls’ Day (November 2).
It is said that on Día de los Muertos, the spirits of the dead travel back to visit the living that were left behind when their souls departed. It is a time of celebration — when offerings of the departeds’ favorite foods, sweet treats, sugar skulls called calaveras and even tequila are left out on the ofrendas, or altars, created by the families of the deceased. Elaborate flower arrangements, candles and crosses turn the ofrendas into true works of beauty.
In preparation, NOVICA artisans have created a wealth of gorgeous Día de los Muertos-inspired treasures to honor this important festival. From dangle earrings to decorative boxes, ceramic sculptures to festive coasters, there are so many ways to participate in this colorful holiday. |
