How female artisan collectives across Central America have transformed the lives of countless women and their families.

In 1987, a group of women widowed by Guatemala’s brutal civil war decided to transform loss and poverty into strength and resilience through the art of weaving. Their name is an ancient Mayan phrase that means “let’s get together.” Now, more than three decades later, they are stronger than ever. With bamboo fibers and natural dyes, they create stunning works of textile art, which allow them to take ownership over their lives and livelihoods.

Wakami

Jewelry made from delicate glass beads in rose, aquamarine or crimson. Wrap bracelets of lavender macrame, or waxed cord studded with pendants. These are just some of the gorgeous treasures that Wakami creates. Their name is derived from a Kaqchikel Maya word that means, "it already is.” From rural villages with few opportunities, these women have created a social system that brings ancient craftsmanship to the art-loving world. While their works are undoubtedly eye-catching, they also transform the lives of rural women and their families.

Women Artisans of Santa Cruz

The town can only be reached by boat or on foot. There is no telephone service and many residents lack basic necessities. And yet, the women artisans in Santa Cruz La Laguna have discovered a way to survive — and to elevate their families and community in the process. Through weavings, crochet and seed bead jewelry, they have found artistic and economic opportunities. With the help of Pat Torpie, who pooled resources in 1998 to help support this community, the collective has grown and continues to thrive, now supporting eight projects managed exclusively by women, including a restaurant and a store.
