The ancient Hindu legend behind Holi is as colorful as the festival that honors it. Prince Prahlada refused to worship his father, the King, as a god, and instead, swore his allegiance to Lord Vishnu. As punishment, the king’s sister, Holika, lured her nephew into a fire, where a magic shawl was supposed to protect her from the flames. But Lord Vishnu intervened at the last moment, blowing the shawl from Holika’s shoulders onto Prahlada’s, saving him because of his unwavering faith.
