The Night Before

While Nyepi may usher in a rare day of silence on the Island of Gods, the night before Nyepi is all about sound. Hindus and non-Hindus alike show up for the Ngrupuk parade, which weaves through the streets in a terrifying, magnificent procession. Revelers carry enormous statues of Ogoh-ogoh, meant to represent evil spirits in the Balinese Hindu tradition of Buta Kala. Music blares at maximum decibels. Shouting and banging ring out through the night, an invitation to all malevolent spirits to emerge from hiding, so that they can be banished for the year. Finally, the parade ends in a wild, ritual burning to clear the way for the holy Day of Silence that follows.
