A Legacy Lives On | From father to daughter, the art of Balinese woodcarving is passed along from one generation to the next | | | Master wood carver Nyoman Subrata was with us from the beginning. One of Novica’s earliest artisans, Subrata’s gorgeous works showcased some of the best carving to be found on Bali. With his passing in 2020, the enormous task of maintaining his legacy has been left to his daughter, Nyoman Indrawati Subrata, who has clearly inherited his artistic skills.
As a young girl, she helped her father finish his sculptures after school and on holidays. By the time she was in elementary school, he had taught her to find the best wood, create her own designs and complete her sculptures. Eventually, she “became his right hand.”
Nyoman Subrata’s passing not only left a gaping hole in the hearts of his family, but it also deprived the world of a very gifted artisan. We are glad that Nyoman Indrawati Subrata made the decision to carry on his work.
She says, “As the daughter of a great wood carver, I am proud to continue his legacy. I will…continue his work to keep his name remembered as a great artisan. I will carry on what my father started."
Watch Nyoman Subrata create his famous Janger Dancer sculpture. |
