When Art Calls | How one Ghanaian designer channeled her passion for style into a gorgeous collection of apparel, jewelry and accessories. | | | Some of Lydia Mawuenya Amedzrator’s earliest memories are of books. Her father was a big proponent of education for his five daughters, so it’s no surprise that she made her way to university, where she studied English, Spanish and sociology. Despite her accomplishments in higher education, she felt the pull of art. Lydia recalls sitting in her father’s library as a child when she came across her first fashion magazine. It sparked something in her that only intensified with age.
After enrolling part-time in a fashion school, Lydia began designing her own apparel, jewelry, and accessories. At first, she sold primarily to friends and family. Over time, however, her creations grew in popularity. Today, she employs five community members.
With her commitment to authentic African prints, 100% cotton fabrics, and organic materials including wooden buttons, shells and traditional beads, Lydia’s work has taken the world by storm. Her designs — for both women and men — are inspired by the people she meets, the stories that move her, and the traditions she grew up with.
She says: “My dream is to see my designs become internationally known, and I am looking forward to an all-round exciting relationship with you all." We hope you love her creations as much as we do! | | | | | | |
