The World Peace Project showcases artists and artisans from around the globe whose works of art thematically engage with the topic of peace. From paintings and sculptures to jewelry and decor, each creation is accompanied by the artist’s written explanation of their featured submission.
This year, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Leymah Gbowee serves as one of NOVICA’s honorary jurors. Her own description of peace resonates powerfully: “I believe peace is not just the absence of war, but the presence of conditions that dignify all of us.” She explains that those conditions include sufficient food, shelter, health, education, climate, and “all the basic human security needs that create space for all to thrive.”
Gbowee led thousands of women in nonviolent protests to help defeat Liberia's brutal warlord-president and bring an end to the country's 14-year civil war in 2003. She is an inspiring, active representative of hope and inspiration today. Her work continues through her nonprofit, the Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa, which empowers women and youth through education and leadership development programs.
We love Gbowee’s motto: "The world is upside down. It’s going to take a lot of hands to turn it right side up.” We hope you enjoy viewing her fine-art favorites selected from NOVICA’s 117 finalists in the fine art category. We at NOVICA encourage you to please support all the hundreds more participating artisans by shopping their peace-themed jewelry and decor submissions as well, here: | | Gbowee’s 5 current favorites from The World Peace Project: | | | |
