Petrona Gomez

“Without the legacy of previous generations, our weaving traditions would have disappeared by now."

Born in a Maya village in the highlands of Chiapas, Petrona Gomez recalls her earliest memories of watching her mother weave on the backstrap loom, and her mother’s commitment to perfection. “When a weaving didn't come out like she wanted, she'd unravel it and start all over again,” Petrona says. “It was a process of doing it over and over again.” This fierce dedication to excellence was passed down to Petrona, who says, "The challenge in this beautiful project is that…it requires me to practice tirelessly on the loom, to fail again and again and to learn from each error.”

El Tucan Artisan Association

These guardians of the Amazonian forests craft with unconditional love for their land, each species of tree and animal, and the planet itself.

Located in the Kukama Kukamiria community of San José de Sarapanga in the Andes, The El Tucan Artisans Association is a collective of families dedicated to preserving the Amazon “so that it continues to be the green lungs of the world.” Their art not only preserves traditional crafts, but also the biodiversity of the Amazon. Using continuously reforested palm trees, El Tucan Artisans create stunning works of carved wood tableware. With the heart of the tree, they transform the vegetable fiber into ornamental pieces that celebrate the diversity of local flora and fauna.
