While NOVICA has always championed the idea that “a better world for artisans is a better world for all,” three years ago, we spearheaded an initiative to make the day official. This year, as we celebrate the third annual World Artisan Day, we are delighted to see how far it has come.
From our Artisan Empowerment Hubs across the globe, we catch heartening glimpses of festivities in full swing. In India, marigold garlands and rangolis flowers greet artisans, who are honored with gifts like sweets, a handmade shawl and a coconut, symbolizing the highest respect one can receive. In Bali, artisans and team members pray together at Besakih Temple, Main Penataran Agung Temple and Gelap Temple, and afterwards share a meal and inspiring stories. In West Africa, everyone is dressed in traditionally printed cloth to watch a dancer perform the Kete, a Ghanaian Akan dance that incorporates gestures that signify peace and love. From Thailand to Mexico to the Andes and Brazil, World Artisan Day celebrations give us hope that global makers will receive the recognition they so deserve for preserving culture, uplifting communities, and reminding us all that art can change the world. |
