Alebrijes originated from papier-mâché artisan Pedro Linares in 1936. The popular origin story describes Linares falling ill with a high fever causing him to hallucinate. In his feverish dreams, he saw a forest filled with unnaturally colored creatures with wings, horns and fierce teeth. Adding to this psychedelic scene was a crowd of voices nearby, repeatedly shouting the nonsense word 'Alebrije.' When he awoke,Linares re-created the creatures he'd seen with papier-mâché and cardboard, giving birth to a new artistic tradition.

His work became famous and eventually influenced artisans in the state of Oaxaca who decided to craft alebrijes using traditional wood carving methods.

This alebrije statuette takes the form of an armadillo and is created by Mexican artisans Pablo and Lucy Mendez using copal wood.
