Wio Terminal Classroom with IoT #4 | Microsoft Azure IoT Central with IoT Plug and Play

Welcome to our third edition of the Wio Terminal Classroom Series; Wio Terminal Classroom with IoT!

In this fourth episode, Lakshantha will explain how to connect the Wio Terminal to Microsoft Azure IoT Central easily with IoT Plug and Play. He will first show a demonstration of sending in-built accelerometer data from the Wio Terminal to Microsoft Azure IoT Central and display it on dashboards and also beep the in-built buzzer on the Wio Terminal using Azure IoT Central. Then he will build a Smart Garden project to display the sensor information from temperature/ humidity sensor, soil moisture sensor, and in-built light sensor on the Wio Terminal LCD and send the data to Azure IoT central, and visualize on dashboards!

With the goal of reinforcing good technique in mind, Joseph designed a device that is capable of detecting when one hand is in a blocking position, while the other hand is throwing a punch.

The neural network was trained using Edge Impulse on a body of accelerometry data derived from boxers throwing different types of punches. The model achieved 99.4% classification accuracy in detecting punch types. Detecting blocking proved to be more difficult, as the arm remains in a static position when guarding. A secondary model was used, a k-nearest neighbor algorithm, to recognize the difference between a good block and a bad block.

Azure IoT Central now supports IoT Plug and Play with certified devices such as Wio Terminal.
 

Microsoft Azure Internet of Things are focusing on Democratizing IoT with IoT Plug and Play. Thanks to Sandeep Pujar’s article on Microsoft Tech Community, he mentioned that Azure IoT Central has simplified IoT solution development by developing and adding various support for IoT Plug and Play, offering the community with more different set of scenarios.
 

By pairing the Azure IoT Central solution template with IoT plug-and-play certified device such as Wio Terminal, developers can simulate the deivce, Wio Terminal, with rich dashboards and visualizations derived from DTDL device models.

LoRa GPS Tracker with Wio Terminal

This tutorial describes how to create your own LoRa GPS tracker using Wio Terminal. The coordinates can be seen live on the map.
 

  • Live tracking on OpenStreetMap (It can be used on other Map services for example Google Map or MapQuest with minor changes)
  • By double pressing the button on Sender, you receive an alarm notification (Buzzer Beep) in Receiver. (Wio Terminal)
  • The Temperature/Humidity sensor indicates the current Temperature/Humidity of the Sender.
  • The buzzer on Sender provides a sound which helps you find the Sender Box.
  • The information received from the Sender on Wio Terminal can be stored on the memory card. (This information includes coordinates, date, time, temperature and humidity)
  • It is possible to upload information received from Sender on a personal server or other cloud services for example Adafruit IO.
