Meet the Rip Curl range

The new Rip Curl range of winter wetsuits has landed on Planet Earth, and we’re sure you’ll agree they look sensational. The aesthetic’s spot-on, the performance reinvigorated with extra stretch and a raft of updated technical features. But what do they mean for you and your winter shred schedule? To guide us through the range, we enlisted Gearoid McDaid, aka G-Man, who knows a thing or two about cold and angry water, in fact for half the year he barely gets out of it.

First, a quick run-through of the key features, including a few technical upgrades to be found in the new range.

New: Flex Energy 2

This revolutionary neoprene is “activated” when stretched, generating heat as you move through the water. Now in a new and improved formula, it’s used for the large back and shoulder panel in all Flashbomb Heat Seekers.

New: E6 Flash

It’s as warm and as fuzzy as ever, but now even faster-drying, and boasts 20% more stretch than its predecessor, E5 Flash. You’ll find it lining all Flashbomb and Heat Seeker Flashbomb suits – even the internal taping on the seams is E6 Flash-lined.

Thermo Shield and Liquid Mesh

Thermo Shield and Liquid Mesh

Unique to the Heat Seeker, this smoothskin cladding on the arms (Thermo Shield) and chest (Liquid Mesh) absorbs solar heat and repels wind while boasting superior stretch and durability to standard mesh, which can be both restrictive and easily damaged.

E6 Thermo

Used to line the E-Bomb collection (and the upper body in zipperless Flashbombs), E6 Thermo prioritises freedom of movement and performance – the ultimate high-stretch, lightweight thermal lining.

Zip-free entry

Zip-free entry

Probably the smoothest zip-free entry system on the market, featured in all Heat Seekers and E-Bombs and some Flashbombs. Entry systems are generally a matter of personal preference – G-Man’s happy with either a chest zip or zip-free, but says “there’s something especially comfy about a hooded zip-free Heat Seeker – it’s next level.”
 
The Flash Bomb Heat Seeker

G-Man says: “Irish winters get very cold in the depths of Febuary, I think it gets down to around 5 Celsius. My staple suit would be the 5mm hooded Heat Seeker, I don’t need anything more than that. The thing’s so warm that even on the coldest days I’m still roasting.”
