In memorial of Jack O'Neill
A TRUE OCEAN PIONEER AND SURFING ENTHUSIAST
The term “legend” is thrown around a lot these days, but few figures in surfing history are worthier of the epithet than Jack O’Neill. That iconic visage, with its grizzled beard and a patch over one eye (lost in a surfing accident in the ‘70s), reflects a life packed full of adventure – everything from surfing to sailing to homemade hot-air ballooning. Always first in the water, he was also the owner of the first ever surf shop and maker of the first ever surfing wetsuit. Yep, every time you go for a surf and don’t get hypothermia, it’s Captain Jack you should be thanking – and on this day July 9th, we remember Jack O'Neill.

Though best remembered for the brand he built, it’s telling that Jack O’Neill was proudest of founding the Sea Odyssey program, which used his own 65ft catamaran to teach California's school children about ocean stewardship in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. This sense of shared understanding and collective endeavour is at the heart of his legacy, which lives on today in some of the stories and the O'Neill Blue collection featured below. These products were designed for durability, more circularity and towards a better future. It is O'Neill's commitment to carry on this legacy and protect the oceans for generations to come.
